BYRN-ING AMBITION AT FINGAL.

Byline: PAUL O'HEHIR

CONAN BYRNE Conan Byrne, born in Dublin on 10 July 1985, is a footballer, currently playing with Eircom League side UCD. Byrne scored prolificly for the UCD under-21s upon joining the club and eventually made his way into the UCD starting lineup as a forward.  is determined to board the plane to Zambia on Monday morning with an FAI Cup The FAI Cup is a knock-out association football competition contested annually by teams from the Republic of Ireland (as well as Derry City from Northern Ireland). Organised by the FAI (Football Association of Ireland), it is of similar format to the FA Cup played in England.  winners medal tucked away in his pocket.

The Sporting Fingal ace has featured in every game for the Dublin club this season and is determined to close the season on a high.

Byrne is also the club's Community Development Officer and is jetting off to Africa to spread the good word of the club.

"Every League of Ireland This is a disambiguation page. League of Ireland may refer to:
  • Football League of Ireland - the original football league in the Republic of Ireland that existed from 1921 until 2006.
club should be looking at us as an example," he said. "I can't see any other clubs doing what we do in the community.

"I'm heading off to Zambia the day after the Cup final to do community work, under the Sporting Fingal banner."

Byrne, four students and two teachers from Balbriggan Community College and St Joseph's Secondary School in Rush, will travel to Mongu, Western Zambia for two weeks.

They will visit orphanages, aid clinics, hospitals and schools, and will teach basic literacy skills to children. And Byrne says it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

OPPORTUNITY "If I just had football and that was it, I might get sidetracked by other stuff," he said. "I'm busy but I wouldn't have it any other way." And Byrne is confident Fingal will flourish once they move away from Morton Stadium Morton Stadium, or the National Athletics Stadium, is an athletics stadium in Santry, in the north of Dublin City. Often called Santry Stadium, it is the centre for athletics events in Ireland, and home track of Clonliffe Harriers Athletic Club.  and into their purposed built base in Lusk.

"That's where we will see it shine. Like Shamrock Rovers, really. They went to Tallaght and now look at them every week. We look long-term at this club."

Tomorrow, all the focus shifts from off-field goals to on-field ambition. Fingal have secured Premier Division promotion already this season, and Sligo stand in their way of cup glory.

"Some of the teams maybe underestimated us in terms of our ability," added Byrne.

"We've technically gifted players at the club and a lot of experienced players that have won cups and leagues."

And Fingal have already won at Tallaght Stadium Tallaght Stadium is a municipal stadium currently under construction in Tallaght in South Dublin County, Ireland. It was originally proposed to create a new Football (soccer) stadium for Shamrock Rovers. The design allows for a capacity for 6,000 all seated spectators.  this season, dumping Shamrock Rovers out after a replay. Could that stand to the club? "I'd say so," added Byrne. "The big pitch suits us. We're a passing team, like to get the ball down and spread it out wide, Tallaght will suit us."
