BYRD LIFTS ANGELS PITCHER MAKES A LITTLE OFFENSE COUNT IN VICTORY ANGELS 3, CLEVELAND 1.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

CLEVELAND - The Angels are living proof that offense is overrated Overrated was a Horde World of Warcraft guild, based on the US Black Dragonflight Realm. On November 2 2006, the majority of the guild members were indefinitely banned from the game for use of (or directly benefiting from) a third-party "wall-hack", used to bypass content , especially when they continue to win without much of it.

After a nine-run outburst Sunday, the Angels reverted to their recent struggles, managing just seven hits Monday. But with Paul Byrd Paul Gregory Byrd (born December 3, 1970 in Louisville, Kentucky) is a Major League Baseball right-handed starting pitcher who plays for the Cleveland Indians.

The Angels have averaged only 3.4 runs per game in their last 20 games, but because of their pitching, they've gone 12-8 in that stretch. On Monday, Byrd shut out the Indians through seven innings on 85 pitches.

The victory improved his career record to 5-0 with a 1.60 ERA against the Indians. He didn't allow a Cleveland baserunner to get into scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on  until the seventh, when he gave up a single and a walk.

in the last inning,'' he said. ``I made some bad pitches. It was probably a good time (to come out).''

By that time, the Angels had just enough offense to feel comfortable about handing the ball to the bullpen.

Vladimir Guerrero Vladimir Alvino Guerrero (born February 9, 1976 in Don Gregorio, Nizao, Dominican Republic), and known in his native Dominican Republic as Miquéas (Spanish for Micah), is a Major League Baseball right fielder who plays for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  drove in Darin Erstad Darin Charles Erstad (born June 4, 1974 in Jamestown, North Dakota) is a first baseman/center fielder in Major League Baseball currently with the Chicago White Sox. Prior to 2007, he had played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise (1996-2006).  with a double in the fourth inning against Indians starter Cliff Lee (4-2).

In the sixth, Garret Anderson's infield single drove home Erstad from third for a 2-0 lead, and in the seventh, Guerrero walked, stole second and scored on Anderson's groundball single up the middle for a 3-0 lead.

Byrd has thrown a quality start in his past four starts and improved to 4-3. But he said he isn't necessarily throwing any better than he was early in the season.

``In 34, 35 starts over the long haul, if you make pitches it evens out,'' said Byrd, who struck out five and walked three. ``(Early in the season) I would break bats and the ball would fall in in key times with guys on base. Now, those balls are being caught.''

Angels manager Mike Scioscia likes what he sees in Byrd.

``He's doing what he does best,'' Scioscia said. ``He's throwing first-pitch strikes, moving the ball around and we're playing good defense behind him.''

Brendan Donnelly relieved Byrd and gave up a run in the eighth, then handed the ball to Shields for the ninth. With closer Francisco Rodriguez nursing a strained muscle in his right forearm, Shields is expected to get most of the closing opportunities, especially if he pitches like he did Monday. Shields needed 16 pitches to retire the Indians in order, striking out two.

``I'm going out there with the same mentality whether I'm starting, setting up, long relief or closing,'' said Shields, who earned his third save. ``One batter at a time, as the old saying goes.''

Shields said his adrenalin was pumping when he first came into the game, and he was clocked at 96 mph when he normally is in the low 90s.
