BY THE NUMBERS; AREA CODE CHANGE BREAKS OFF PART OF GLENDALE FROM VALLEY.

Byline: Yvette Cabrera Daily News Staff Writer

The Hubanks live, work and play in Glendale, but the family and their tiny neighborhood will join the San Gabriel Valley The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California. It lies to the east of the city of Los Angeles, to the north of the Puente Hills, to the south of the San Gabriel Mountains, and to the west of the Inland Empire.  today in converting to the new 626 area code.

The Hubanks and as many as 260 other phone customers in a tiny portion of eastern Glendale are victims of a technological mishap (language) MISHAP - An early system on the IBM 1130.

that has them switching to 626 while the rest of Glendale, Burbank, La Canada Flintridge and La Crescenta retain their 818 identity.

``I think it's a pain,'' said Jana Hubanks, who does bookkeeping bookkeeping, maintenance of systematic and convenient records of money transactions in order to show the condition of a business enterprise. California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  Code Administrator Doug Hescox, who coordinates area code planning statewide for the telecommunications Communicating information, including data, text, pictures, voice and video over long distance. See communications.  industry, explained that the neighborhood is connected to a telephone wire center, a kind of electronic relay station, that will serve the greater San Gabriel Valley.

When officials worked out the mechanics of the area code change, the neighborhood north of Scholl Canyon Golf Course and west of the Art Center College of Design Art Center built its reputation as a vocational school, essentially, preparing returning GIs for work in the commercial arts fields. It has traditionally maintained a strong "real-world" focus, emphasizing craftsmanship, technique, and professionalism while somewhat de-emphasizing theory.  in Pasadena fell unavoidably into 626, Hescox said.

``The serving boundaries of our wire center don't necessarily line up perfectly with city or county boundaries, and that's especially true when you get to a metropolitan area,'' he said.

Despite being thrown into the 626 area, the residents will not see a change in their phone bills since call distance determines call price, Hescox said.

The 626 area code was proposed two years ago as the demand for new telephone numbers skyrocketed.

In 1947, when area codes were first introduced, California had three area codes. It took 50 years to add an additional 10 codes by the beginning of 1997. But by the end of 1998, the state will have added another 10, bringing the total to 23 area codes.

When the area code change was proposed, Glendale and Burbank fought to remain within the 818 area, saying the switch to 626 would force the communities to sever TO SEVER, practice. When defendants who are sued jointly have separate defences, they may in general sever, that is, each one rely on his own separate defence; each may plead severally and insist on his own separate plea. The California Public Utilities Commission The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC; also often commonly referred to as simply the PUC) [1] is a state Public Utilities Commission which regulates privately-owned utilities in the state of California, including electric power,  ultimately allowed Burbank and most of Glendale to retain the 818 area code.  of Glendale joining the 626 area.

The Hubanks family, for instance, moved into the neighborhood 2-1/2 weeks ago and just had home, fax and business lines installed with the 818 area code.

``I just think (the switch) adds to the confusion - we have so many numbers,'' said Hubanks, who also works in her stepfather's two medical practices in Glendale and La Crescenta that will remain in the 818 code.

Her neighborhood, which hugs the chaparral-covered hillsides, is primarily residential, but numerous residents work out of their home.

``How do you fight it? It's just a fact of life,'' said Dennis Dunstan, who just had a new home and business line installed at his Hollyburne Court home.

Dunstan, who was not aware of the area code switch, said he was planning to order business cards soon.

``I'd be very upset. It might have been a different conversation if it had been three weeks later and I had my business cards made up,'' said Dunstan, an entertainment manager.

Residents will have an eight-month period to get acquainted with the new 626 area code. During this period, people calling from outside the area can dial either the old 818 or new 626 code to reach customers in the 626 area code.

Customers in the 818 or 626 area codes also can use seven-digit dialing during these eight months to reach customers between the two areas.

``The more people who get used to dialing the new code early, the better off they'll be,'' Hescox said.
