BY GEORGE, HE REALLY COULD BE VALUABLE.

Byline: KEVIN MODESTI

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - It was a classic basketball moment Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists. , a moment that might stretch into a career for Devean George Devean Jamar George (born August 29 1977 in Minneapolis, Minnesota) is an American professional basketball player for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA. He typically plays small forward but because of his athleticism and defensive activity, can defend many shooting guards as well. .

The New Jersey Nets had just taken their biggest lead over the Lakers, seven points in the fourth quarter, when the Lakers' George went up for a jump shot, 21 feet from the hoop in the right corner. From living rooms in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  to press row in the Meadowlands arena, the old routine was played out.

``Don't shoot ...

``... Nice shot.''

I'll admit, when the ball wound up in Devean George's hands with the 24- second clock running down, I muttered:

``Oh, no.''

Oh, yes.

The jump shot rippled the net and steadied the Lakers. A few minutes later, the champions cut the New Jersey lead to a point when George rebounded a Kobe Bryant Kobe Bean Bryant (born July 23 1978(1978--)) is an American All-Star shooting guard in the National Basketball Association (NBA) who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers.  miss and dunked. ``I was aware of the (24-second) clock, I saw it the whole time,'' George said after the Lakers' film session Tuesday at Continental Airlines Arena. ``I was thinking of dumping it down to (Shaquille O'Neal Shaquille Rashaun O'Neal (pronounced "shak-KEEL") (born March 6, 1972 in Newark, New Jersey), frequently referred to simply as Shaq, is an American professional basketball player, generally regarded as one of the most dominant in the National Basketball Association (NBA). ), but they double-teamed him. And everything was too clogged for me to penetrate. So I just shot the shot.''

What were they thinking in the league's front offices, the Lakers' and the other 28 teams', as George shot the shot?

When his third NBA season ends following this series, George will acquire the liberating status of unrestricted free agency. He can re-sign with the Lakers, stay with the greatest franchise in pro basketball and hope for a larger role in the four-peat attempt. He can take his chances on another team and probably get good money and a starting job.

He explains what's going on What's Going On is a record by American soul singer Marvin Gaye. Released on May 21, 1971 (see 1971 in music), What's Going On reflected the beginning of a new trend in soul music.  inside his head this way: ``I've been trying to play for all the teams, including the Lakers.''

George might have, with one flick of his right wrist, changed 29 ``Oh, nos'' to 29 ``Oh, yesses.''

It was a big shot, all right, the biggest yet for the kid from the Division III college in Minnesota who was the 23rd pick in the 1998 draft. The brightest flash yet of the shooting ability that had been the NBA calling card for the 6-foot-8 guard-forward.

George came into these playoffs with a low 38.5 shooting percentage in his pro career, regular and postseason stats combined. And in these playoffs he'd been worse than that. Since a solid first-round series against Portland, he'd been shooting 20 for 69.

``I think he'd lost a little confidence in that,'' said Tex Winter, the Lakers assistant coach.

Then came the fourth quarter Sunday night, which began with the Lakers and Nets tied, which would be the pivotal period of this series, if any 12 minutes can be called pivotal in a wipeout.

George played 11 of those minutes. Rick Fox played just five, Derek Fisher just one. George made those two big baskets, scored all six of his points in the game. He also grabbed five of his eight rebounds.

``I kept looking over at the bench, like, 'Not yet? Not yet?' '' George said, laughing at himself. ``One time, when I picked up a foul, I started to walk off and (the substitute) wasn't coming in for me, he was coming in for Rick.''

Last spring, Tyronne Lue used a sneaky-good NBA Finals performance against Philadelphia and Allen Iverson to earn a free-agent contract with Washington. Now, George, all that time on the bench most nights leaving him energy to burn, hopes a sniper-sharp fourth quarter drives up his stock.

``I would like to be back here (with the Lakers),'' said George, owner of two NBA title rings going on three. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

if that's going to happen. I'm at a point in my career where I'm trying to build. There may be opportunities out there that I can't pass up.''

Six Lakers could leave the team over the summer. George, Brian Shaw, Mitch Richmond and Slava Medvedenko are free agents. Samaki Walker and Lindsey Hunter can opt out of their contracts.

George, 24, would be hard for the Lakers to let go, especially with Fox turning 33 before next season. George is high-energy, he's quick, he jumps through the roof, and he's a surprisingly tough defender for a young guy who had a scorer's rep.

But the Lakers haven't re-signed one of their draft picks since Fisher. With payroll an issue, the NBA luxury tax a third rail for owner Jerry Buss, George could price himself right out of Los Angeles with another big shot like Sunday's.

Is Devean George a name we'll be hearing all summer?

Oh, yes.
