BW Monitors Chosen for Eurotunnel.Business Editors CALGARY, Alberta--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 16, 2000 BW Technologies (TSE See Tokyo Stock Exchange. TSE 1. See Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE). 2. BW Europe, the UK subsidiary of Canadian-based, BW Technologies Ltd. (TSE:BWT.) will soon provide Eurotunnel - the train tunnel that extends below the English Channel connecting England to France -- with gas monitoring systems worth $120,000 to detect nitric oxide nitric oxide or nitrogen monoxide, a colorless gas formed by the combustion of nitrogen and oxygen as given by the reaction: energy + N2 + O2 → 2NO; m.p. −163.6°C;; b.p. −151.8°C;. , nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide carbon monoxide, chemical compound, CO, a colorless, odorless, tasteless, extremely poisonous gas that is less dense than air under ordinary conditions. It is very slightly soluble in water and burns in air with a characteristic blue flame, producing carbon dioxide; . Competing against a number of major European companies, BW Technologies won the contract to design and manufacture the unique diesel engine pollution monitoring system to specifications required by Eurotunnel. According to Mr. David Cooper, BW Europe's Technical Director at BW Europe, "These diesel engine pollution monitoring systems now offer BW a whole new market in the monitoring of gas turbines, power stations and diesel engines. The fact that they are installed in weatherproof stainless steel stainless steel: see steel. stainless steel Any of a family of alloy steels usually containing 10–30% chromium. The presence of chromium, together with low carbon content, gives remarkable resistance to corrosion and heat. enclosures ensures they can survive wet and salty conditions also found on offshore platforms." The first two of six systems are mounted on 1,500 horsepower, diesel engines at each end of one of the 180-meter long maintenance trains. Diesel engines are put into operation during maintenance, when high voltage power for the normal tunnel traffic must be switched off. Every three minutes, while the diesel engines are running, BW's equipment monitors toxic gases as they are expelled from the diesel engine to enter the exhaust cleaning "scrubbers" and monitors the parts per million parts per million mg/kg or ml/l; see ppm. concentrations of gases after they have been cleaned. Temperature and pressure are also monitored in the exhaust gas catalyst to ensure that the scrubbing system on the trains is operating properly, providing a safe working environment for personnel in the Eurotunnel. BW Technologies Ltd. has been designing and manufacturing a full range of gas detection equipment since 1987 with fiscal 2000 revenues at more than $18 million.
