CVRD invested about US$280 million in the deal. Then, just a week later, it shelled out almost $700 million to purchase iron ore company Ferteco from Germany's Thyssen Krupp.

CVRD plans to streamline operations and cut costs by combining the two acquired companies. The purchases boost CVRD's share of the world iron ore market to 25%, from 21%. The deal is subject to European Union European Union (EU), name given since the ratification (Nov., 1993) of the Treaty of European Union, or Maastricht Treaty, to the
