Some excellent new books about home maintenance and repair are available this year for holiday gift giving or merely to bring do-it-yourself libraries up to date.

The ``rebuilding'' of the book, as Reader's Digest call it, includes coverage of advances in home appliances and electronics as well as new tools and repair products. The new edition has more than 1,000 color photographs and some 2,250 drawings and covers hundreds of topics from appliance repair and adhesives to yard tools and recreation gear. The text is concise but, when combined with illustrations, makes its points clearly. There is a thorough index and a good chapter on home emergencies, including segments on giving CPR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Definition
