BUTTERWORTH/GALLAGHER NAME MIAMI ATTORNEY AS METLIFE INVESTIGATOR

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- State Treasurer and Insurance Commissioner Tom Gallagher and Attorney General Bob Butterworth today announced that they have named Tom Tew, a Miami attorney, to direct the state's inquiry into fraudulent sales practices by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.
"Tom Tew is an experienced investigator of corporate wrongdoing and has demonstrated in previous work for the Florida insurance department his abilities to uncover complicated schemes that have resulted in harm to consumers," Gallagher said. "We have seen him work very effectively with other agencies, including the Securities and Exchange Commission, the U.S. Senate staff, the justice department and the FBI, and other insurance regulators in the United States. We have confidence that Tew will be an asset in our efforts to get to the bottom of this matter."
In 1991, Tew was hired by the deputy receiver of the failed Guarantee Security Life Insurance Co., of Jacksonville, Fla., as special counsel. In that capacity, he explored wrongdoing by the former officers and directors of the insolvent company and activities of law firms, accountants and brokerage firms accused of aiding officials of the company in carrying out fraudulent activities. In 1989, Tew was hired by the deputy receiver of the failed HMO, International Medical Centers, to sue Touche-Ross Inc., accountants accused of negligence in their audit of IMC.
A copy of Tew's resume follows.

In September 1993, Judge Pollack, District Court Judge for the Southern District of New York, appointed Tew as one of four members of the executive committee for the Milken Presidential Life worldwide class action.
Tew was a founder of the Southern Securities Institute where he has been a featured lecturer. For the past 20 years, he has lectured and published on securities and insurance practice and litigation with an emphasis on litigation arising from bankruptcy estates and receiverships.
