LANCASTER - Heat set records for the second consecutive day in Lancaster.

The National Weather Service said Wednesday's temperature at 3 p.m. was 109 degrees, up from the 104 set for the date in 1975, according to according to

Tuesday's temperature reached 112 in Lancaster, topping the previous post-1974 overall high of 110.

The heat peaked in the afternoon when the students were waiting in line for buses and parents to take them home. Keenan said she had a water bottle to spray cooling water on pupils.

``Anybody I see who is waiting for a parent, I get them in the shade and spray them off,'' she said.

There was no new temperature record set Wednesday in Palmdale, where Weather Service statistics date back to 1931. Palmdale's temperature was 102 at 3 p.m. The record for the date is 113, set in 1961. That also is Palmdale's overall record high temperature.

 Hospital emergency room staffers have had no patients brought in with heat-related problems, a spokesman said.

``I think people here just are more accustomed and they know how to handle the heat,'' hospital spokesman Ed Callahan said.

``When the equipment is working near capacity, that's when you find out if something is a little bit marginal - that's when they fail,'' Edison spokeswoman Alis Clausen said.
