Ryan, a resident of Woodland Hills and Solana Beach, died after three years of declining health on April 2. He was 76.

He founded VER Sales, Inc. in Burbank in 1972. The company specializes both in aerospace control cables, some used in the Mars Pathfinder project, and stage rigging equipment used in theater productions and in films such as ``Titanic'' and ``Pirates of the Caribbean This article is about the franchise.  and eggs breakfasts while listening to Dixieland music on Sunday mornings brings a smile to the faces of his three sons.

``He raised us so well. He was my business partner and my friend,'' said middle son, Paul Ryan. ``I already miss him. I feel his energy. I will stop and consider, when I'm in despair or elated, what would he do? He was a great man.''

Besides his great love for Dixieland music, Ryan enjoyed playing golf and loved ``the horses.'' He co-owned race horses that ran at Del Mar.

``Your first impression of him would have been, what a handsome man. When my parents walked down the street they turned heads. He had a huge heart and made people feel very comfortable,'' said youngest son, Patrick Ryan. ``As a parent he was stern, strict and fair. I'm going to remember that we liked to argue politics over the dinner table. He had a good time doing it. The last phone call I had from him he was singing `Happy Birthday.' He died on my birthday.''

James Joseph Ryan was born to parents James and Demetria Perrin Ryan on March 19, 1929, in Ware, Mass. He attended New England College of Business and Accounting in Worcester, Mass., and Colorado University in Denver. Ryan worked with CF & I Steel in Palmer, Mass., in the wire rope division from 1952-1968.

Ryan is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gloria Rheaume Ryan; sons, Craig, Paul and Patrick; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Bernardine of Siena Roman Catholic Church Roman Catholic Church, Christian church headed by the pope, the bishop of Rome (see papacy and Peter, Saint). Its commonest title in official use is Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.  in Woodland Hills. Ryan was cremated.
