BUSINESSES TRUST J.D. POWER TO SURVEY THEIR FUTURE RESEARCHER CELEBRATES 35TH ANNIVERSARY.

Byline: Evan Pondel Staff Writer

Some would say J. David Power Dave Power (born 1944 in Chicago, Illinois) was a two-time All-American tennis player at the Indiana University Bloomington in 1965, 1966, and 1967.

He won the singles title at Cincinnati in 1966, defeating Tom Gorman in the semifinals and William Harris in the final.
is the ultimate consumer benchmark, using his nose for business to help companies and their customers make wiser decisions.

Even as his Westlake Village company, J.D. Power and Associates, celebrates its 35th anniversary today, the 72-year-old trendsetter trend·set·ter

continues to leave an indelible mark on customer satisfaction. Equally important, Power's personality and prowess have enabled his company and those he has advised to weather the rigors of an unstable economy.

``One of the things that I learned at the college level is to have a mind that doesn't take things for granted and search for both sides of the equation,'' he said Tuesday.

``He is an incredibly warm and grounded businessman who built the equity of his company on his high ethical standards,'' said Deborah Heisley, associate professor of marketing at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , where Power is an adjunct professor of marketing. ``He is a wonderful role model.''

The J.D. Power name does have a massive following. The company's customer satisfaction surveys for the automobile industry automobile industry, the business of producing and selling self-powered vehicles, including passenger cars, trucks, farm equipment, and other commercial vehicles.  have become the hallmark of quality, with companies touting their placement in the annual results. The company also surveys consumers of telecommunication, health care and retailing.

As his name connotes, Power seemingly has the ability to influence public perception in a way that, as he says, ``cuts through the logjams.''

To do that, the company surveys millions of consumers and businesses every year to understand their opinions and expectations.

Bert Boeckmann, chairman of the No. 1 seller of Ford automobiles to individuals in the world, certainly understands the potency of the J.D. Power name. Three years ago, Ford Motor Company hired Power to certify the quality standards of its dealerships.

``So, I put a lot of trust in Power's reputation. And I know he is on the ball considering I have watched his validation process,'' said Boeckmann, whose dealership is based in North Hills. ``J.D. Power is honest, bright and dedicated.''

He said the customer service department depends on Power's research to strengthen ties with the community.

``J.D. Power is helpful for the consumer because the company is a credible source when making decisions,'' Miller said.

Power served for four years aboard a Coast Guard icebreaker icebreaker, ship of special hull design and wide beam, with relatively flat bottom, designed to force its way through ice. Ford Motor Co. hired Power as a financial analyst in 1959, which was followed by a stint as a marketing research consultant for General Motors Corp.

``That's where I learned to look for information holes,'' he said. ``Obviously, an important aspect of the business.''

Power founded the company out of his home in 1968, with just a couple of employees, including his wife who did calculations on the kitchen table.

Today, Power's privately held company privately held company
