BUSINESS TODAY: Lufthansa sets record; in association with RBS TRAVEL.

FLIGHT numbers to and from Newcastle International Airport on an important route to Europe have soared in the last 12 months.

German airline Lufthansa said 2007 proved to be a record breaking year setting a airline record for passengers carried to and from the North East.

The 2007 figure of 20,472 is up almost 24 % on 2006 and comes within two months of the airline introducing a twice daily service to Dusseldorf. The figures show the growth of Lufthansa's passenger numbers at Newcastle is more than four times the airline's average increase for the year.

Marianne Sammann, Lufthansa's general manager UK & Ireland, said: "There is no doubt that the introduction of our second daily service to Dusseldorf is a major factor in the record figures."
