BUSINESS RECORDS SAVED FROM L.A. RIOTS BY FIREPROOF FILES
LOS ANGELES, June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- A Los Angeles office products dealer has a new sales pitch for customers considering fireproof files: the story of his own business records, saved from destruction during the recent Los Angeles rioting because they were stored in insulated filing cabinets.
The Dozar Company, at 2656 South Western Avenue, was one of many businesses burned to the ground during three days of rioting in late April and early May. Dozar president David Oreck says he is the only business owner he knows of who was burned out, yet literally opened for business the next working day.
"While the building was still smoldering on Friday morning, May 1, I dug through the rubble and found my file cabinets," Oreck said. "I got the records and my computer disks out, found temporary office space over the weekend, and was back in business Monday morning."
Some of the company's non-essential records, such as old invoices, were in regular, uninsulated metal file cabinets. Oreck said those documents were reduced to ash.
The records that survived the fires were in FireKing(R) files, one of the lines Oreck carries in his store.
Since it's his business to sell fireproof files and other office equipment, Oreck said he was gratified that his insulated files performed so well during the blaze, especially with regard to his computer records.
"You can see just a little brown edge on a few of the paper invoices," he explained. "The computer tapes and disks were inside a unit called a Transformer(R) in one of the FireKing cabinets, and they made it through in perfect shape. You could never tell they'd been through a fire at all."
A Transformer is a heavily insulated storage unit specially designed by FireKing to sit inside a fireproof file, offering protection for magnetic records, which can be distorted or destroyed by temperatures as low as 125 degrees Fahrenheit.
"We've always told our customers that fireproof files are a helluva cheap investment, when you consider what's at stake," Oreck said. "Now we can add a personal testimonial, as well."
FireKing International is based in New Albany, Ind. The company is the nation's leading manufacturer of fireproof files, commanding 60 percent of market share.
