NEWSPAPER ADS INCREASE $2 BILLION: Newspaper advertising revenue increased by $2 billion last year, the Newspaper Association of America The Newspaper Association of America is a United States trade association that represents the country's largest daily newspapers and provides services including market research, technology education and support, minority hiring and representing publishers in Washington, D.C.  reported Wednesday.

Total advertising revenue grew to more than $38 billion in 1996, a 5.8 percent increase over the previous year. Classifieds increased by 9.9 percent to $15.1 billion, while national advertisements rose 10.1 percent to $4.7 billion. Retail ads grew 1.6 percent to $18.4 billion.

Fourth-quarter results for the organization showed an 8.9 percent increase in classified advertising - up to $4.5 billion. Retail grew 1.5 percent to $5.5 billion and national ads rose 8.9 percent to $1.2 billion.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., which recently agreed to help develop the Busang field, said tests over the past three weeks showed it may contain insignificant amounts of gold.

Meanwhile, Bre-X Minerals Ltd., the tiny Canadian mining company that found the deposit, said an independent consultant determined that earlier samples were either invalid or improperly evaluated.

 PAY PRICE-FIXING FINES: Two Swiss chemical companies agreed Wednesday to pay $25 million in criminal fines and plead guilty to conspiring to fix the price of citric acid citric acid or 2-hydroxy-1,2,3-propanetricarboxylic acid, HO2CCH2C(OH)(CO2H)CH2CO2  around the world.

With these agreements, the total criminal fines imposed in the Justice Department's antitrust investigation into price-fixing of additives for food and animal feeds reached $195 million.

That includes the largest criminal antitrust fine in history - the $100 million imposed on Archer Daniels Midland The Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE: ADM), is a conglomeration based in Decatur, Illinois. ADMoperates more than 270 plants worldwide, where cereal grains and oilseeds are processed into numerous products used in food, beverage, nutraceutical, industrial and animal feed  Co., of Decatur, Ill., in October when it pleaded guilty to conspiring to fix prices for citric acid and lysine lysine (lī`sēn), organic compound, one of the 20 amino acids commonly found in animal proteins. Only the l-stereoisomer appears in mammalian protein. .

Two executives of the Swiss companies, F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd. and Jungbunzlauer International AG, also agreed to plead guilty and pay criminal fines totaling $300,000 for their part in the conspiracy.

Citric acid is used to flavor and preserve soft drinks, processed foods, detergents, drugs and cosmetics. Each year, $1.2 billion worth of citric acid is sold worldwide.
