BUSINESS NOTES SUN WORKERS URGED TO TAKE VACATIONS.

Sun Microsystems Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA[3]) is an American vendor of computers, computer components, computer software, and information-technology services, founded on 24 February 1982.  has asked all workers with unused vacation time to take five of those days off by year's end to cut costs.

The network computer and software maker, hit hard by weakening demand for workstations and servers, recently announced plans to cut up to 300 jobs.

The vacation push is the second time this year.

Motorola dropping manufacture lines

Motorola Inc. announced plans Wednesday to phase out two semiconductor manufacturing lines in Arizona, continuing its consolidation and adding more job cuts to the sweeping reductions already made.

Ducommun buys assets in Arizona

Los Angeles-based Ducommun Inc. said Wednesday that it has acquired certain assets of the Fort Defiance Fort Defiance may refer to:

The Fort Defiance operation supplies wiring harnesses and cable assemblies for use in commercial and military aerospace applications and other military applications.

Sales for the current calendar year are expected to be about $10 million.

Fort Defiance will be integrated with MechTronics of Arizona Corp., an existing Ducommun subsidiary. The acquired operation will remain at its existing facility. Founded in 1849, Ducommun Inc. manufactures components and assemblies for the aerospace industry.
