BUSINESS NOTES KPC MEDICAL GOES ON BANKRUPTCY LIST.


Anaheim-based KPC "Keeping parents clueless." See digispeak.  Medical Management, the Southland's largest for-profit medical group, is closing its clinics and filing for bankruptcy protection. The group served about 300,000 patients compared with more than 1 million 18 months ago.

WellPoint Health Networks, which operates Blue Cross of Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , has terminated its contract with KPC, said WellPoint spokesman Michael Chee. About 38,000 Blue Cross members were affected by the development. They were assigned new doctors Friday, Chee said.

 aircraft attain milestones

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway.  - The competing aircraft in the joint strike fighter program The Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) became synonymous with the later F-35 Lightning II, however until 2001 the term was applied to the competition between the Boeing X-32 and Lockheed Martin X-35.  hit milestones this month with a simulated carrier landing for the Boeing aircraft and aerial refuelings for the Lockheed Martin aircraft.

Lockheed Martin and Boeing are competing for a multibillion-dollar contract to build joint strike fighters to replace the Air Force's aging F- 16s and A-10s, the Marine Corps' AV-8B and F-18C/D, and the United Kingdom's Sea Harrier and GR-7. The joint strike fighter is also intended to augment the U.S. Navy's F-18E/F E/F Educator/Facilitator  fleet.

The JSF flight test program will last about one year, with a decision on which company will be awarded the production contract due next summer.

Airline mechanics union may strike

CHICAGO - United Airlines' mechanics union planned to ask federal mediators to release it from contract talks and declare a 30-day cooling- off period after which they could legally strike - potentially during the Christmas and New Year's travel seasons.

The union's 15,000 members, who also include customer service and ramp workers, have been working without a contract since July.

Boeing to spin off some companies

SEATTLE - The Boeing Co. is considering spinning off some of its prospective high-growth businesses, including one that offers Internet service for aircraft, though the aerospace company said Monday that it has not finalized any plans.

One scenario would call for Boeing to make new companies out of one or more of the businesses. Shares of a new company would be distributed to Boeing shareholders.

The idea is that the businesses, such as the Connexion by Boeing Connexion by Boeing (CBB) was an in-flight online connectivity service from Boeing. This service allowed travellers to access a high-speed internet connection while on board a plane in flight through a wired Ethernet or a wireless 802.11 Wi-Fi connection.  in-air Internet venture or Air Traffic Management - its effort to develop a private air traffic control system - could generate better profits as a separate company.

Coke shops today for Gatorade sale

ATLANTA - Coca-Cola's board of directors is scheduled to meet today to discuss a possible acquisition of Quaker Oats and its powerhouse Gatorade drink.

The meeting is taking place after investors fled Coke stock Monday amid concerns that the Atlanta-based beverage giant would be paying too much for Quaker. The stock plummeted 8 percent, or $4.94, and closed at $56.56 after news reports Monday that Coke was considering a $16 billion stock offer exchanging 1.9 Coke shares for each Quaker share.

Quaker's stock rocketed on the news, jumping $5.19 to a closing record $95.50, although it traded as high as $98.94.
