One million visit Universal in Japan

T-bill rates mixed in Tuesday sale

WASHINGTON - Interest rates on short-term Treasury securities were mixed in Tuesday's auction.

The Treasury Department sold $12 billion in three-month bills at a discount rate of 3.605 percent, up from 3.540 percent last week. An additional $10 billion was sold in six-month bills at a rate of 3.550 percent, down from 3.640 percent.

The three-month rate was the highest since May 14, when the bills sold for 3.630 percent. The six-month rate was the lowest since Feb. 22, 1994, when the rate was 3.53.

In a separate report, the Federal Reserve said Tuesday that the average yield for one-year constant maturity Treasury bills, the most popular index for making changes in adjustable rate mortgages, rose to 3.78 percent last week from 3.76 percent the previous week.

Lucent's merger talks break down

AT&T investors trade for wireless

NEW YORK - AT&T Corp. investors are trading in a combined 372.6 million shares of their stock in exchange for shares in the company's wireless business, which is slated to be spun off as an independent concern this summer.

About 438.2 million shares of AT&T Wireless Group will be issued to those investors under the exchange offer that expired on Friday.

GM aims to take over Daewoo firm

SEOUL, South Korea - U.S. automaking giant General Motors Corp. will submit a formal proposal to take over South Korea's ailing Daewoo Motor, GM and Daewoo's main creditor said Tuesday.
