BUSINESS NOTES CAPSTONE TURBINE GETS INDUSTRY AWARD.

Woodland Hills-based Capstone Turbine Corp. has received a prestigious technology innovation award for its line of microturbine power systems.

The company, the first to offer commercial power through microturbine technology, received the Most Innovative Commercial Technology Development Award at the second annual Financial Times Energy Global Awards in New York on Thursday.

The system generates electricity and heat from natural gas, methane, propane, diesel and kerosene kerosene or kerosine, colorless, thin mineral oil whose density is between 0.75 and 0.85 grams per cubic centimeter. A mixture of hydrocarbons, it is commonly obtained in the fractional distillation of petroleum as the portion boiling off between 150°C; and 275°C; (302°F;–527°F;). Kerosene has been recovered from other substances, notably coal (hence another name, coal oil), oil shale, and wood. and other energy sources while generating extremely low emissions, using only a single moving assembly and using no oil, coolants or other liquids.

``Only in America could venture capital invest $260 million and stay with the vision for more than eight years,'' said Capstone president and chief executive officer Dr. Ake Almgren.

Utah Tribune's sale fought by managers

SALT LAKE CITY - AT&T Corp. has agreed to sell The Salt Lake Tribune to MediaNews Group Inc., parent of the Daily News of Los Angeles, but managers of Utah's largest newspaper sued to block the deal Friday.

The Tribune was owned by descendants of mining magnate and turn-of- the-century U.S. Sen. Thomas Kearns Kearns (kûrnz), uninc. town (1990 pop. 28,874), Salt Lake co., N Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City. Alfalfa and barley are grown and cattle and sheep are raised. There is copper mining nearby. until 1997, when it merged with cable company Tele-Communications Inc. AT&T purchased TCI last year.

The Tribune ``is a nonstrategic asset for AT&T,'' said Steve Lang, a spokesman for AT&T's Broadband division. ``We're not really in the newspaper business.''

Lang said the company expects to complete the sale by the end of the year. He would not disclose terms.

The Tribune filed a complaint in federal court against AT&T on Friday, claiming the sale breaches an agreement the Kearns family signed when it sold the paper to TCI that promised Tribune management a chance to buy back the paper in 2002 and manage the paper in the interim.
