The Tribune was owned by descendants of mining magnate and turn-of- the-century U.S. Sen. Thomas Kearns Kearns (kûrnz), uninc. town (1990 pop. 28,874), Salt Lake co., N Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City. Alfalfa and barley are grown and cattle and sheep are raised. There is copper mining nearby. until 1997, when it merged with cable company Tele-Communications Inc. AT&T purchased TCI last year. The Tribune ``is a nonstrategic asset for AT&T,'' said Steve Lang, a spokesman for AT&T's Broadband division. ``We're not really in the newspaper business.'' Lang said the company expects to complete the sale by the end of the year. He would not disclose terms. The Tribune filed a complaint in federal court against AT&T on Friday, claiming the sale breaches an agreement the Kearns family signed when it sold the paper to TCI that promised Tribune management a chance to buy back the paper in 2002 and manage the paper in the interim. - Associated Press |
