Fast track urged in Microsoft case

WASHINGTON - The Justice Department urged the Supreme Court on Tuesday to decide quickly whether the giant Microsoft Corp. should be broken into two computer software companies.

A delay ``could irreparably harm competition in a vital and rapidly evolving sector of the national economy,'' a brief from government attorneys states. The court should take the case now and skip intermediate panel hearings - for only the third time since 1974 - because a speedy resolution ``has immense importance to our national economy,'' the brief says.

Government attorneys estimated that a final resolution of the antitrust case would be reached at least one year earlier if the high court exercised its discretion to take the case now.
