What they can't see are the millions of tiny fiber optics fiber optics, transmission of digitized messages or information by light pulses along hair-thin glass fibers. Each fiber is surrounded by a cladding having a high index of refractance so that the light is internally reflected and travels the length of the fiber  that have been used to wire the shopping center shopping center, a concentration of retail, service, and entertainment enterprises designed to serve the surrounding region. The modern shopping center differs from its antecedents—bazaars and marketplaces—in that the shops are usually amalgamated into  for cutting-edge communications into the next century.

The Promenade at Westlake's fiber optic network is being handled by GTE's SmartPark department. In general, fiber optics provide the capability to transmit voice, data and video. It is required for the latest multimedia technologies as it provides for instantaneous response and photographic quality images.

Kent Kincey, manager of development applications for SmartPark, cities many advantages for the Caruso center.

``The days of films being hand-delivered in canisters are numbered. Movie theaters, such as the Mann Theatres at the Promenade, will one day show feature films using the telecommunications network A telecommunications network is a of telecommunications links and nodes arranged so that messages may be passed from one part of the network to another over multiple links and through various nodes. ,'' Kincey said. ``Even virtual reality games require advanced telecommunications technologies. As acceptance of the Internet and electronic transactions grow, the fiber optic network will allow Promenade retailers to be out in front offering on-line ordering and home delivery services.

Formerly a subsidiary of Albertsons, Bristol Farms is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Supervalu, Inc.  or have a movie sent electronically from Hollywood Video. While these technologies are not available today they are coming.

``In the near term, we envision tapping the fiber optic network for interactive kiosks that will provide our customers with information and services beyond what is physically available at the Promenade,'' he added.
