BUSINESS LEADERS JOIN FORCES TO CREATE SOFTWARE APPLICATION INTEGRATION STANDARDS.BOSTON --(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Feb. 23, 1995 -- Nine of the largest enterprise application software companies in the world, representing more than $2.4 billion in revenue, today announced the formation of a new industry organization called the Open Applications Group (OAG OAG Office of the Attorney General OAG Office of the Auditor General (of Canada) OAG Official Airline Guide OAG Open-Angle Glaucoma OAG Open Application Group OAG Operational Advisory Group ). The OAG s objective is to promote Open Application Integration by developing industry standards that facilitate easy integration of applications from multiple vendors and other sources, such as in-house development groups. The result will allow users to choose best-of-breed applications while achieving the benefit of an integrated solution with reduced implementation costs. Founding members of the OAG are: American Software, The CODA (1) A distributed file system developed at Carnegie Mellon University in the late 1980s. The immediate goal of the group is to create integration specifications which allow any application to interoperate with another application that is conformed to OAG standards. Initially, this will be accomplished by establishing specifications for interoperability of enterprise applications. The overall goal of the OAG, however, is to establish and promote standards which will make all key application functions available to users without special interfaces. The formation of the OAG focuses on interoperability of these systems. We expect to work closely with the OAG as it moves toward distributed objects Software modules that are designed to work together but reside in multiple computer systems in a private network or on the global Internet. A program in one machine sends a message to an object in a remote machine to perform some processing. . Members of the OAG have been meeting in an exploratory capacity for several months to validate the industry need for integration standards and to begin preliminary work on specifications. Three projects have already been started which will provide integration standards in three application areas. An example of one of the projects includes developing specifications that enable financial applications to communicate with logistics and manufacturing applications. The founding members of the OAG met with the common purpose of providing more choice for their customers, said Paul Margolis, OAG chairman. As we discussed our customers needs, we quickly realized that they would benefit from a standard approach to application integration across multiple vendors. By promoting Open Application Integration and connectivity, customers can choose best-of-breed applications and still get the integration which typically is only available from a single vendor solution. The result will be lower costs and more freedom of choice for our customers. Corporate and Associate Corporate membership in the OAG is available to qualified enterprise applications software organizations. The OAG also plans to issue specifications and license them to any interested party. To obtain more information about the OAG, membership application procedures, fees or the issuing of specifications, contact Holly Henson at Marcam Corporation, 95 Wells Avenue, Newton, Mass. 02159, USA, 617-965-0220.
