HIV HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), either of two closely related retroviruses that invade T-helper lymphocytes and are responsible for AIDS. There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS in the United States.  Alliancereceived the following grants between April 1 and June 30: United Way of Lane County, $17,853 to support HIV prevention outreach to injection drug users; The E.C. Brown Foundation, $17,500 to expand the youth HIV prevention program; Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, $5,000 to purchase harm reduction and HIV prevention supplies, and $2,500 to help replace an old van, both used in the Sana Needle Exchange program needle exchange program Syringe exchange program Public health Any program intended to slow the spread of AIDS among IV drug users, in which a governmental or charitable agency exchanges sterile needles for dirty, potentially HIV-contaminated needles used by IVDAs ; and Lane County Medical Alliance, $750 for one-month's supply of biohazard bi·o·haz·ard

 Indian Foundation also has given the program $20,000 for dental restorative work for children under age 6. The Assistance League of Eugene, a nonprofit group, has received the following grants: $4,000 from the Oregon Dental Foundation to support the Children's Dental Center; and $1,000 from the Edwin E. and June Cone Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation for general support.

FOOD for Lane County purchased 25,000 pounds of heart-healthy food, valued at $12,500, thanks to $2,500 gifts from five sources: Safeway, Seneca Jones Timber Co., Monaco Coach and Lane County Commissioners Faye Stewart and Bill Dwyer. , the Faye and Lucille Stewart Foundation. Dwyer, who spearheaded the purchase, used money from his discretionary office fund. The food purchase included: 7,700 pounds of brown rice; 5,100 cans of tuna; 780 whole frozen chickens; 85 cases of Garden Burgers; and 408 bags of trail mix.

OASIS Education Center has received a $2,500 grant from the Doyle and Donna Shepherd Fund of The Oregon Community Foundation and a $2,500 grant from the Elizabeth S. Holden Fund of The Oregon Community Foundation. The money will be used to help pay for the rural expansion of the OASIS Tutoring Program.
