VALENCIA - A walk through the warehouse reveals odd bubbles in all shapes and sizes, space-like air pockets encasing wine bottles, delicate crystal vases and pricey laptop computers.

Air Packaging Technologies Inc. has, until recently, provided solely to industrial companies what its president calls ``a superior packing alternative to protect against shock and vibration'' during transport.

But a new contract with office supply giant 3M is taking the Valencia- based protective packaging outfit to the consumer market, marketing air cushion air cushion

The unit is based out of the Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D.  reported up to 20 percent breakage when transporting ultra-fragile silicon wafers.

The 20,000-square-foot warehouse contains tons of noisy machines, but the laboratory is equally important in producing the air-filled plastic protection.

``We're able to check the product's performance under all types of conditions. We even have an altitude chamber See: hypobaric chamber.  to simulate flight'' during airborne transport, said Ochacher, a lawyer who joined the company two years ago.

``We can protect a bottle of wine you want to send your grandmother for Christmas. But it's also a form of advertising,'' he said. ``We call it the `wow' effect.''
