BURROUGHS TOURNAMENT: CRESCENTA VALLEY TAKES CROWN.

The Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  High girls' basketball team is still undefeated.

The Falcons held off North Hollywood 54-52, in overtime to win the championship of the Burroughs tournament Saturday night.

After trailing for most of the second half against the defending tournament champions, Crescenta Valley tied the score at 50-50 to forced overtime on a 3-point shot by Kristie Umemoto with 24 seconds left.

In overtime, Crescenta Valley took the lead for good, 52-50, on a jump shot by tournament MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip.  Sinnamonn Garrett with 2:04 remaining and extended it to 54-50 on two free throws by Kelly Paige with 41.4 seconds left.

North Hollywood was held scoreless in overtime until Richelle Sherman followed a missed shot with 29 seconds left to cut the advantage to 54-52.

North Hollywood regained possession with 1.5 seconds left when Umemoto intercepted a length-of-the-court pass to preserve the victory.

``We knew were a disciplined and never worried about losing,'' Garrett said. ``We knew our team had a lot of heart to come back with good defense.'' Garrett had a game-high 25 points and Umemoto, a junior guard, had 14 - including three 3-point baskets - to keep Crescenta Valley (10-0) in the game in the second half.

The Falcons led only once in the second half, 47-46, on a pair of free throws by Kelly Paige with 3:19 remaining.

Glendale 64, Agoura 57: Glendale scored the first eight points of overtime for a 61-53 lead with 1:40 to play.

Tanya Adary had 7 assists and scored 10 points, including a 3-point basket with six seconds left in regulation for a 53-53 tie to send the game into overtime for Glendale (9-2).

Birmingham 54, Burroughs 41: Ofalangi Mailangi scored 18 points for Birmingham (4-3) in the fifth-place game.

North Hollywood, however, rallied a 28-28 halftime tie with the inside play of Sherman, who scored eight of her 10 first-half points in the second quarter.
