BURROUGHS FACES BIG GAME : HART TO PLAY SURPRISING CONTENDER.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

At the start of the football season, it was pretty much a given that Hart and Saugus Saugus (sô`gəs), town (1990 pop. 25,549), Essex co., NE Mass., a suburb of Boston on the Saugus River near the Atlantic Ocean; settled before 1637, set off from Lynn and inc. 1815. Mainly residential, the town has some light manufacturing.  would meet in the 10th week to play for the Foothill League high school championship.

Locally, nobody expected the game for the title would come this weekend with Hart against Burroughs See Unisys. .

``The big talk was how Saugus and Valencia were going to do in league,'' said Hart coach Mike Herrington. ``Burroughs kind of snuck snuck

Not since 1987 has Burroughs been in a game this big. They played Hart and lost, their only blemish blem·ish

on a 9-1 season that year. This season, the Indians' record so far is 7-1, 3-0, better than Hart's 6-2, 3-0.

``They've exceeded a lot of people's expectations,'' said Burroughs coach Robert dos Remedios. ``We're not as deep, but our first string is solid on both sides of the ball.''

They've done it on J.K. Scott's passing - usually to Glenn Adriatico. But several other players, including Brian Criscuollo, have caught at least 30 passes.

``They're getting the job done,'' Herrington said. ``They're 7-1, and it's got us scared. All (Scott) has to do is complete a couple of passes and we're down 14-0.''

Defense could be the deciding factor, and Herrington said Hart has the edge with linebacker Todd Todd , Sir Alexander Robertus 1907-1997.

That leaves Conrad Weiderhold as the primary running back.

``He's good, but his expertise is slotback/fullback,'' Stiman said.

Sophomore Rick Zeller has been working out at Weiderhold's former position.

``Making changes in the middle of the season is difficult, but even more so for a young kid,'' Stiman said.

Canyon (2-6, 0-3) vs. Burbank (2-6, 0-3) at Burroughs High School: Who would have thought these teams would have the same records at this point?

Both teams are out of the playoff picture, so the motivation is to avoid finishing last. They're trying to go out on a winning note and end losing streaks, five straight losses for Canyon and three for Burbank.

``We're playing for pride and respect,'' said Canyon coach Larry Mohr.
