BURRILL'S BASEBALL SUCCESS HAS BEEN A FAMILY AFFAIR.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

Brady Burrill's value to the Valencia High baseball team is unmistakable. As his coach, Dennis Mifflin, said, ``If you take away Brady Burrill, we don't win.''

He hit, caught and motivated the Vikings to new heights this season, including a 17-11 record and the school's first playoff victory. He finished as the team leader in average (.482), hits (40), RBI RBI

 (28) and doubles (11) and also struck out just five times this season, the lowest among starters.

He earned a scholarship to Cal State Northridge, but first comes the end of his prep career, a spot in Saturday's 22nd Annual Daily News Bernie Milligan All-Star Game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games  at Northridge.

But Burrill places his value in his family and friends, which was why at the team's banquet he spent five minutes thanking everyone: mom, dad, brother, sister, even grandma and grandpa who flew in from Grand Rapids Grand Rapids, city (1990 pop. 189,126), seat of Kent co., SW central Mich., on the Grand River; inc. 1850. The second largest city in the state, it is a distribution, wholesale, and industrial center for an area that yields fruit, dairy products, farm produce, , Mich.

``Theyare what I remember,'' he said. ``All of my special moments in baseball, they were there.''

Like the time he hit a home run against Burbank. It was the first time his grandparents grandparents nplabuelos mpl

saw him play. Before the game, the grandfather told him to hit a home run because his older brother, Casey, who starred at Hart and USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , autographed his first home run they saw.

``The joke is my ball is next to Casey's,'' Brady said.

Another joke came at the banquet. The players know Mifflin teaches economics and encourages the use of coupons. So teammate Ryan Coe cut out coupons, put them in a box, and Burrill presented them to Mifflin. Burrill considered it a special moment.

A series of special moments came during three years of math in which his father, Jerry, was his teacher. Throughout honors geometry, honors algebra algebra, branch of mathematics concerned with operations on sets of numbers or other elements that are often represented by symbols. Algebra is a generalization of arithmetic and gains much of its power from dealing symbolically with elements and operations (such as  2 and honors math analysis, the two Burrills adjusted and enjoyed their time.

Brady thought it was illegal to have your parent as your teacher. After the teasing teasing

gave him, he probably wished it was. He can't count how many times people said things like, ``Easy A'' and ``Teacher's Pet'' and ``Your dad is giving too much homework'' and ``Tell your dad we need another day before the test.''

``My freshman year, I wondered what did I get myself into?'' he said. ``I couldn't say anything to argue. It was a different sort of atmosphere.''

Jerry has been teaching for 34 years, but it took Brady time to realize his father was the same demanding, no-excuse man at home as well as in class, and he learned plenty.

By the way, he received A's each year, but he said he earned them. Besides, math always has been his favorite subject.
