BURN SCORCHES REELING GALAXY : L.A. LOSES FOURTH STRAIGHT TO DROP INTO THIRD PLACE DALLAS 3, GALAXY 2.

Byline: Kevin Acee Daily News Staff Writer

Furious finish.

Still falling fast.

The Galaxy took 10 shots in the second half, most of them in the final 20 minutes, yet could not complete the comeback and lost 3-2 to the Dallas Burn on Sunday in front of 19,270 at the Rose Bowl.

Thus, the Galaxy's losing streak is four games. It is the team's second four-game losing streak, the longest skid of any team in Major League Soccer's first season.

``It's getting scary,'' Galaxy coach Lothar Osiander Lothar Osiander (born November 8, 1939 in Munich, Germany) is a U.S.-German soccer coach who has served as head coach to the U.S. national and Olympic teams as well as the Atlanta Ruckus, Los Angeles Galaxy and San Jose Clash.  said after his team lost for the 10th time in 13 games. ``I guess we have to lose 12 in a row before we win another one.''

Osiander's typical attempt at softening the moment with humor by referring to the Galaxy's 12-0 start to the season did little to make him or his team feel better.

A victory would have meant first place all alone atop the Western Conference. Instead, the Galaxy (15-10, 39 points) is in third for the first time. San Jose San Jose, city, United States

, which beat Colorado 1-0 on Sunday, is just three points behind the Galaxy.

Dallas (16-11, 40 points) moved into a first-place tie with Kansas City Kansas City, two adjacent cities of the same name, one (1990 pop. 149,767), seat of Wyandotte co., NE Kansas (inc. 1859), the other (1990 pop. 435,146), Clay, Jackson, and Platte counties, NW Mo. (inc. 1850).  (16-13, 40 points) and has a legitimate claim to first place in that it won its season series against Kansas City 3-1.

The fact that the Galaxy has more games remaining - seven compared to Kansas City's four and Dallas' five - than the conference leaders is starting to carry less significance. The Galaxy has to win a few of those to make the games-in-hand mean anything.

``Today we wanted to be the day we're turning things around going into the playoffs,'' defender Dan Calichman Daniel (Dan) Jacob Calichman (born February 21, 1968) is a former American soccer defender.

said. ``Falling to third place isn't so upsetting. It's just about time we win a game.''

And how about the Galaxy winning a game against a decent team? Its last victory over a team with a winning record was 1-0 over New England New England, name applied to the region comprising six states of the NE United States—Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. So, the Galaxy's last win over a legitimate winner was June 16 against Tampa Bay Tampa Bay, inlet of the Gulf of Mexico, 25 mi (40 km) long and 7 to 12 mi (11.3–19 km) wide, W Fla., separated from the Gulf by numerous small islands; it receives the Hillsborough River. For the umpteenth time during the Galaxy's high-speed chase to the cellar, Osiander said, ``We played well enough to win, but . . .''

Jeesh.

The fans are even tired of that.

The Galaxy was booed numerous times Sunday by what previously had been a mostly happy-go-lucky group of folks.

And who could blame them? Not Calichman.

``It's fine,'' he said. `We deserve it. There's no problem for them to be doing it.''

That might have been a little harsh. The Galaxy did show well Sunday.

And it might have scored a few more times with its 21 shots.

The Galaxy threatened many times in the first 22 minutes and had just put together a series of attacks when Dallas cleared the ball, catching the Galaxy off guard.  on him, Dallas' Leonel Alvarez sent a beautiful backward volley in to Diego Sonora, who dribbled across the box and drilled a shot under Jorge Campos to give the Burn a 1-0 lead.

The Burn led 2-0 at the half after a goal off a direct kick from 27 yards by Jason Kreis in the 33rd minute. Kreis' hard shot hit off Campos' gloves and went diagonally down into the side of the net.

It was the first time Campos had given up two goals in a half. By game's end, he would have given up three goals for the first time.

Dallas seemed to have put the game out of reach with Dante Washington's goal in the 76th minute.

But Hurtado took another pass - this time from Arash Noampuz - in front of the net and headed it past Dodd.
