BURLEY HANDS MICK ARMBAND; MICK.Byline: Craig Swan GEORGE BURLEY bur·ley n. pl. bur·leys A light-colored tobacco grown chiefly in Kentucky and used especially in making cigarettes. [Probably from the name Burley.] is set to hand the Scotland captaincy back to Stephen McManus - just weeks after stripping him of the honour. The Celtic defender is poised to regain the armband arm·band n. A band worn around the upper arm, often as identification or as a symbol of mourning or protest. Noun 1. armband - worn around arm as identification or to indicate mourning for tomorrow's friendly clash against Japan inYokohama. Ironically, the move comes at the end of a week when McManus was openly criticised for his performances along with the rest of the Parkhead defenders by his club boss,Tony Mowbray. But Burley will go cap in hand to the 27-year-old due to the absence of new first choice Darren Fletcher from the trip. McManus lost the armband when he missed the World Cup qualifier in Norway through injury. Despite his return for the final Group 9 games with Macedonia and Holland, the Manchester United ace retained the job. Burley has explained that Fletcher is now his man but McManus is favourite to step back into the role in the Nissan Stadium for a one-off return. Meanwhile, Japan warmed up for the Scotland game with a stunning 6-0 win last night over Hong Kong in a final-round qualifier for the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar. |
