BURKA-CLAD WOMEN JOIN PLAY SHOW PART OF V-DAY BENEFIT TO END DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.

NEWHALL - A hidden aspect of the war in Afghanistan will come to Newhall on Thursday evening, when burka-wearing actors take the stage as part of ``The Vagina vagina: see reproductive system.

The segment is one of several in the controversial production being presented as part of the V-Day Worldwide Campaign, sponsored by the Zonta Club of the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. ``When my daughter took me to see this play, I immediately thought of Zonta,'' said Adele McPherson, organizer of the production. ``Zonta is committed to stopping violence against women. We know there is violence in this community and by linking with other communities in this effort, we will have a larger impact.''

Statistics from the Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley show a 24 percent increase in domestic violence in the past three years, from 553 incidents in 1998 to 731 in 2001.

The show will be presented for one night only, a restriction imposed by the Worldwide V-Day organization. ``When I first started saying the word, reaction was mixed,'' McPherson said of the play's title. ``But the emotions went across all ages and sexes. It's like everything, (the play) is an expression, an art form, a choice.''
