When forward Linda Burgess BURGESS. A magistrate of a borough; generally, the chief officer of the corporation, who performs, within the borough, the same kind of duties which a mayor does in a city. In England, the word is sometimes applied to all the inhabitants of a borough, who are called burgesses sometimes it  found out she was getting her first start of the season Thursday in a against the Utah Starzz, she said some prayers before she went to bed.

They were answered in a big way as she led the Sparks to a 75-68 win Friday night at the Forum with a team-high 20 points and nine rebounds in front of 7,187 fans.

Aside from a stellar game, Burgess earned herself a return to the starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .

plays,'' coach Linda Sharp said. ``I think we found an answer to our three position. That's what we were in search of.''

Burgess converted on 9-of-12 and blocked three shots in 33 minutes to snap the Sparks' two-game losing streak. Before Friday, she was averaging 6.1 points and 14.3 minutes per game.

The Sparks (4-5) led by 16 at the 13:46 mark but Utah, which lost its fourth straight, made its run and cut the lead to within three several times down the stretch.

Starzz forward Wendy Palmer, the team's leading scorer with at 16.4 points per game, missed two critical free throws when her team was down 71-68 with just over 30 seconds remaining. The Sparks made 4 of 6 from the line during the final seconds securing its closest win of the season.

Palmer, who scored 28 points in the Starzz's June 23 win over the Sparks in Utah, finished with 17.

``We needed to make some adjustments,'' said Sharp of giving forward Heidi Burge Heidi Burge (born November 11, 1971 in Palos Verdes, California) is a retired professional basketball player. She is the twin sister of Heather Burge. Both graduated from Fairfax (Va.  her first start of the season as well. ``We just needed a little more experience, and Heidi has that experience. It also gave us a little more mobility. Our front line was a little more intimidating in·tim·i·date

Burge, who has four years of professional experience playing overseas, scored 14 and also had a team-high nine rebounds. Center Lisa Leslie

``I got to taste what it felt like to be the person that always gets the ball and it felt good because people don't give accolades to that person at the high post but that's the person making the play,'' the 6-foot-5 Burge said.

Racking up six assists was fine with Leslie, who finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Leslie had led the Sparks in scoring and rebounds in seven of the team's nine games.

``We needed to get other players involved in scoring because it opens more options,'' said Leslie, who has grown used to teams doubling on her. ``The better other players do, the better for me.''

This was a critical game for the Sparks, who lost their first contest of a three-game homestand, but Sunday's matchup with the Cheryl Miller-coached Mercury is even more important.
