Byline: Mary Lou Aurelio Daily News Staff Writer

In response to a rise in traffic accidents involving pedestrians, the Burbank Police Department The Burbank Police Department is the police department serving Burbank, California.

While crime in the city has shown a significant decline since the early 1990s, there has been a 20 percent increase in the number of pedestrian-injury incidents in that period, Burbank police Capt. Gordon Bowers Bowers is a surname, and may refer to

More than 50 pedestrians were hurt on Burbank streets last year, he said.

Council members, who took no action on the captain's report, said the increased enforcement and safety precautions precautions Infectious disease The constellation of activities intended to minimize exposure to an infectious agent; precautions imply that the isolation of an infected Pt is optional, but not mandatory.  are on the right track.

issue is safety for our citizens,'' Mayor David Golonski said.

The pedestrian-injury accident rate has risen from an average of just over four pedestrians hurt per month in 1990 to just over five hurt monthly in 1998, the captain said.

He blamed the pedestrian injury rise on an increase in the city's population. He also said that in about one-quarter of the cases the pedestrian was at fault.

Causes include crossing in the middle of the block and failing to yield to vehicles.

The city still has a lower rate of mishaps involving pedestrians when compared with several other communities, Bowers said. Last year, just over 50 pedestrians were hurt in traffic in Burbank, while Pasadena had about 75, Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. In an effort to cut down on the injuries, the department plans to:

Increase the number of stings, where officers dressed in plain clothes pose as pedestrians in crosswalks to catch drivers who do not stop.

Transfer one or two officers from other divisions to the motorcycle squad.

Target certain locations for increased enforcement.

Use the department's ``Street Beat'' show on cable television to educate the public on safety precautions.

``The fact that we have as few accidents as we do, is a credit to our Police Department'' Councilman Ted McConkey said after hearing the report. ``I wish that there were zero, but in this society, we know that's not possible.''
