The City Council will send a letter today voicing support for keeping Media City Center's antique antique. The term has been used collectively to designate classical Greek and Roman works of art, particularly sculptures; as an adjective to indicate an object, a period, or a style of ancient or early times; and as a noun, for objects of art, furniture, rugs,  carousel in the downtown mall The Downtown Mall in Charlottesville, Virginia is one of the longest pedestrian malls in the United States. ``There's overwhelming support in the community,'' Councilman Bob Kramer said. ``I think it's a valuable asset to the city.''

The City Council voted this week to send an official letter of support for the carousel to owners Center Trust Inc. The city has no legal authority over mall operations.

``We can't strong-arm them. We can't threaten them,'' Mayor Stacey Murphy said. ``We can just say, `Gee, this would be really nice,' and keep our fingers crossed.''

More than 4,300 petition signatures have been collected. City Hall has received numerous calls in support of the carousel. And a handful of people have spoken at City Council meetings, asking the council to do something to keep the carousel where it is.

``That carousel brings people into the mall,'' said Nancy Hutchins, the great-great-granddaughter of the carousel's designer and the person who started the petition drive. ``Even from a business perspective, I just don't see a single, legitimate reason to take that carousel out of there.''

The City Council is scheduled later this month to talk about alternatives for the carousel if and when it is evicted from the mall.
