BURBANK SITE OFFERS HASSLE-FREE TAX HELP.

Byline: Peter Hartlaub Daily News Staff Writer

Taxpayers who ventured up to the state Franchise Tax Board's suite in an otherwise empty building in Burbank on Saturday may have noticed something odd about the doors.

The Franchise Tax Board helps citizens sort out their state income taxes.

Dave and Debbie Mrstik drove to the Saturday session from Rosamond to resolve a back-tax issue from 1993. Expecting a bureaucratic mess, they were happy to get an immediate appointment, write a check and leave early for lunch.

``We're just happy we're not in jail,'' Dave Mrstik joked.

Employees at the Franchise Tax Board office in Burbank didn't have as many customers as their federal counterparts did, but those who did show up were just as baffled by the quick, in-and-out service.

On Saturday the part-time accountant, part-time musician coasted to the 333 N. Glenoaks Blvd. office and filed without incident.

``Historically I've found that the Franchise Tax Board is difficult to deal with but this place is really easy,'' Minshall said. ``It seems like they're trying to do what the IRS An abbreviation for the Internal Revenue Service, a federal agency charged with the responsibility of administering and enforcing internal revenue laws.  did. They know people are fed up.''
