BURBANK QUESTIONS TRANSFER.

Byline: GERRY GITTELSON Community Sports

Ty Duncan, a second-team All-Foothill League defensive tackle for Burbank High this past season, has transferred to Westlake High, and Burbank football coach Greg Sobiech said he plans to file an official complaint with the Southern Section as soon as possible because he said he believes Duncan was recruited.

Westlake coach Jim Benkert confirmed Duncan, a 6-foot-3, 285-pound sophomore, recently enrolled at Westlake.

``The kid is a real player. Our principal and I are definitely putting together a formal complaint against Westlake High School Westlake High School may refer to:

  • Westlake High School - Atlanta, Georgia
  • Westlake High School - Westlake, Louisiana
  • Westlake High School - Westlake, Ohio
  • Westlake High School - Austin, Texas
,'' Sobiech said. ``I really can't say too much right now, but there's going to be some trouble. This is unacceptable. I had to lose this kid.''

Sobiech said he believes Westlake has violated vi·o·late

Duncan wasn't available for comment.

Benkert said Duncan's mother works in Malibu and that the two have moved into Westlake's boundaries. He also said he hasn't been informed about Duncan's abilities as a football player.

``I haven't got into it much because I'm in track now. From what I know, he and his mom have moved out here,'' Benkert said.

Burbank is scheduled to participate in the Foothill League for one more school year before moving to the Pacific League in 2006-2007.

``He just decided that football isn't going to be part of his future anymore, so he didn't want to put his body through it any more (by participating in the Shrine event),'' she said.

O'Brien, who had expressed interest in playing football at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. He also didn't return phone calls seeking comment.

Meanwhile, O'Brien's brother, Tyler, a promising starting receiver/running back for Valencia's freshman team this past season, has transferred to a new school, West Ranch High.

The younger O'Brien, the area's dominant youth-football running back before high school, said the two reasons he transferred were because he has more friends at West Ranch and he didn't want to compete for playing time at Valencia with returning varsity standout Shane Vereen, a sophomore running back.

``Shane is pretty much in there. I didn't want to wait three years,'' Tyler said.
