BURBANK PLUGS IN POWER PLANS.

Byline: Sylvia L. Oliande Staff Writer

BURBANK - In ongoing efforts to stay ahead of the game during the state's power shortage, the city has allocated $89.3 million more to the Burbank Water and Power budget this year to meet supply expenses.

Also, the City Council agreed to move forward with a planning agreement with the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. ``The new generator would give us a source of modern, efficient, reliable power,'' Ronald Davis, Burbank Water and Power's general manager, said Wednesday. ``What we have is old, not fuel-efficient and, frankly, not that clean. The new stuff is over 90 percent cleaner.''

At its meeting Tuesday night, the City Council unanimously approved an additional $89.3 million allocation to the BWP BWP

Davis said the funds are primarily to purchase power for the city's needs and to sell on the open market, as well as to pay for fuel to generate its own power. The cost of natural gas rose significantly this year.

In another action, the council unanimously moved a step forward in a plan to replace two of its closed generators at the Magnolia Plant with a new, fuel-efficient plant.

Last September, the Southern California Power Authority agreed to take the plant on as one of its planning projects, which allows other power authority members to join in the venture. According to according to

Fred Fletcher, a BWP assistant general manager, said the city of Anaheim agreed to option a portion of the plant's output at its own meeting Tuesday night.

The new plant would produce 50 percent more energy and emit 97 percent less pollution. The new technology uses 20 percent less fuel.

If approved, construction could be completed as early as 2003 or as late as 2005.
