BURBANK ORCHESTRA TO GIVE FREE CONCERT.

 will stage a free concert tonight featuring a Beethoven overture and the U.S. premiere of a symphony by Czech composer Zdenek Fibich.

Fibich (1850-1900) is not well known outside what is now known as the Czech Republic but was a contemporary of the more well-known Anton Dvorak. As he composed the symphony in the summer of 1898, Fibich was recovering from scarlet fever scarlet fever or scarlatina, an acute, communicable infection, caused by group A hemolytic streptococcal bacteria (see streptococcus) that produce an erythrogenic toxin. .

He was living in Polabi, in the valley of the Elbe river, enjoying walks in the pine forests, catching butterflies in the meadows and lounging in the garden around the farmhouse where he stayed. The symphony is said to reflect his happy state of being at the time and his rich emotional life.

Music director and conductor for the Burbank Chamber Orchestra is Steven Kerstein, who also directs the West Los Angeles

He is a Los Angeles native and a graduate of the University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission .

In July 1997, Kerstein conducted two concerts in the Czech Republic with the South Bohemia Philharmonic.

The concert is free thanks to donations from the city, corporations and private donors.
