BURBANK HOME FOR BLIND FEDERATION NOW OPEN.

Byline: Susan Abram Staff Writer

BURBANK - The California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  chapter of the National Federation for the Blind opened its permanent home Friday in the city's downtown district, making it easier for local residents to utilize its services.

President Nancy Burns said the organization is now better equipped to serve the community by holding educational workshops and providing referrals. The new office, at 175 E. Olive Ave., off San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the , is accessible to those who take public transportation, she said.

The organization had previously worked out of a Burbank home.

Along with a new office, the organization has a different mission that will emphasize more education about blindness, Burns said.

Burns said a previously released study showed that after cancer and AIDS, people fear vision loss the most. About one in five people deal with vision loss, she said.

But the organization plans to change that perception. Volunteers will visit several retirement homes in the area to help seniors learn how to deal with vision loss, including how to maneuver maneuver /ma·neu·ver/ (mah-noo´ver) a skillful or dextrous method or procedure.

``We're planning to do things differently,'' Burns said of the organization's mission. ``We feel blindness doesn't have to be a tragedy. We're planning to get people in here to teach them that they can be active and live a full life. We'll educate family members of the blind and provide Braille workshops to those who would like to know more about it.''

The organization held a ribbon cutting ceremony A ribbon cutting ceremony is a public ceremony conducted to inaugurate the opening to the general public of a new building or business.

Often, it is conducted in just the manner the name suggests: by tying a ceremonial ribbon across the main entrance of the building, which
