BURBANK DANCE CONCERT SERIES KICKS OFF.

BURBANK - Put on your dancing shoes and get into the swing tonight as the city kicks off the first of eight concerts of big band, jazz and salsa music Salsa music or "salsa" is a Latin music generic/umbrella term developed in New York City specifically during the 1970s that was used to describe mainly Afro-Cuban popular Latin dance music generally utilizing rhythms from Cuba, particularly son and guaracha.  in ``Swingin' Sounds from Downtown.''

``We're just thrilled with everybody coming to downtown,'' said Gail Stewart, downtown manager for the city. ``We expect excellent turnout.''

The dance concerts will be held on Thursday nights through Aug. 25. The events kick off at 6 p.m. with free swing or salsa dance classes. Bands strike up at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

This event will be the second annual show paid with $30,000 by the city's Business Improvement District to help revitalize downtown.

``It's going to be fabulous,'' said Michael Cusumano, chairman of the BID and a longtime local real estate developer. ``It is an opportunity for the public to come out and see what downtown Burbank has to offer. It's really an exciting opportunity to come out and have fun.''

Michael Andrew & Swingerhead is the featured band tonight, followed next week with the Swingin' Deacons, then Johnny Crawford's Vintage Dance Vintage dance is the authentic recreation of historical dance styles. The term is also used specifically to denote re-creation of the dances of the English Regency (1795-1820), American Civil War (1860s), Victorian, and Ragtime eras.  Orchestra.

Other bands to perform later include: Royal Crown Revue The Royal Crown Revue is a band formed in 1989 in Los Angeles, California.
