BURBANK COUNCILWOMAN PLEADS NOT GUILTY TO CHARGES.

PASADENA - Burbank City Councilwoman Stacey Jo Murphy pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of felony felony (fĕl`ənē), any grave crime, in contrast to a misdemeanor, that is so declared in statute or was so considered in common law.  possession of cocaine and misdemeanor child endangerment.

Murphy, who had been free on $100,000 bail, was released on her own recognizance own recognizance (O.R.) n. the basis for a judge allowing a person accused of a crime to be free while awaiting trial, without posting bail, on the defendant's own promise to appear and his/her reputation. . She is scheduled to appear again in court on Sept. 28.

Murphy was arrested July 13 as part of a federal investigation into the Vineland Boys street gang.

Police found three guns, 900 rounds of ammunition and cocaine at her Lima Street home. Murphy was booked on suspicion of child endangerment because the guns were accessible to her 12-year-old son, police said.

After the arrest, Murphy said in an open letter to the city that she wouldn't attend City Council meetings until after her court date. But on Thursday, officials were awaiting word on whether she would return for next Tuesday's City Council meeting.

Reached at her home, Murphy said she would announce her decision next week.

Murphy's longtime boyfriend, Scott C. Schaffer, 51, was arrested in connection with a federal weapons and drug investigation. Schaffer is accused of trading guns for cocaine with Vineland Boys.
