A device that would tell drivers whether there are any available spots in parking lots was one of a number of solutions to downtown parking woes proposed to the City Council on Tuesday.

Supply has exceeded demand for parking spots on some downtown streets at times, city officials told the council, and setting up the ``Intelligent Transportation System'' in city parking lots would help.

Rick Pruetz, chief assistant community development director, presented several possible options from a staff report, which council members had requested earlier this year. Complaints about the lack of spaces by residents and merchants have been escalating, and a study on the issue was released last year.

The council voted Tuesday to appoint a committee to find the best solutions.

Pruetz said the increased demand is due to several new and developing projects including the AMC (Advanced Mezzanine Card) See AdvancedTCA.  Theaters Entertainment Village, Gangi Media Village, Regent REGENT. 1. Mayor Dave Golonski had a suggestion.

``We're going to have some big challenges . . . It might make sense to think about a comprehensive valet system, to tap unused resources such as office building lots.''

The demand for parking spaces in the 12-block downtown area exceeds the supply at times on some streets, Pruetz said. The city provides public parking at 15 lots. There are 1,696 parking spots available to the public in those lots at all times, Pruetz said.

Pruetz said the city's practice of leasing spaces to businesses in some of the city's parking structures could be curtailed in the downtown area, so new spots would not be leased.
