Before the swearing-in ceremony and the vote, Councilman Dave Golonski, who has served as mayor for the past year, thanked McConkey for his four years of service. A tearful Sharon Boggis, representing Studio Grips Union Local 80, presented the outgoing councilman with a white hat and shirt. ``Thank you, Ted, for never forgetting the people. He is known for battling against the proposed airport expansion and has a loyal group of supporters. But other council members have criticized McConkey's style as confrontational and openly supported Laurell in the election. McConkey said he had mixed feelings about the time he spent on the council and about leaving. ``I'm not going anywhere. You'll see me regularly at the council meetings,'' he promised. With that, McConkey left the council chamber to a round of applause from supporters and others gathered for the special meeting.
