Being around for half a century is no small accomplishment, so organizers have planned one large party. Two hundred tons of sand are being trucked in to turn the parking lot of Bob's Big Boy into Bob's Beach. The beach idea suits Bob's Big Boy, said Mark McKabe of M&S Management, the firm that manages the Burbank site. ``Bob's evolved during the period of the California beach scene, with the hot rods and the diners,'' he said. ``It's apropos ap·ro·pos adj. Even though it was the sixth Bob's when it was built in 1949, it is now the oldest remaining diner. It is noted for the 70-foot-tall neon sign with pink-and-white lettering. The sign, along with the rest of the restaurant, came close to extinction in 1992 when it was slated to be demolished. Those plans changed, however, when the Bob's was declared a Point of Historical Significance. Owner Phil MacDonald restored the diner instead, winning the Burbank preservation award in 1994.
