BURBANK AIRPORT'S FLYING HIGH SMALL DROP IN TRAVEL BUCKING NATIONAL TREND.

Byline: Susan Abram Staff Writer

BURBANK - The plunge in the number of travelers that has plagued California's airports since Sept. 11 has largely skipped Burbank Airport, where travel is down 3.8 percent this June from last.

Southwest Airlines This article is about the American airline. For the former Japanese airline, see Japan Transocean Air. For the British airline, see Air Southwest.
Southwest Airlines Co.
, a key carrier for Burbank, has expanded the number of flights it offers by 2.3 percent in the past year. And a new airline, which began offering flights to Hawaii on June 1, has some travel agents reporting booming business.

``Burbank Airport is doing awesome because of Aloha Airlines Aloha Airlines is an American airline headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii USA. It operates extensive scheduled services within the Hawaiian Islands, and between Hawaii and the West Coast of the United States. ,'' said Mikie Walters, manager of Aladdin Travel in Burbank. ``Every time the telephone rings, it's someone who wants to book a flight to Maui.''

Burbank's small drop in travelers goes against the current trend. Los Angeles International Airport “LAX” redirects here. For other uses, see LAX (disambiguation).

Los Angeles International Airport (IATA: LAX, ICAO: KLAX, FAA LID: LAX
, for example, has reported its slowest passenger volume in six years. There, numbers have fallen from about 33 million travelers between January and June last year to about 27 million for the same period this year.

San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  had nearly 3 million fewer travelers from January to May this year compared with last.

At Ontario International Airport, traffic dropped from about 3.1 million travelers during the first half of 2001 to about 3 million for the same period this year.

Burbank Airport spokesman Victor Gill said the decrease the airport has experienced is partly due to United Airlines scaling back flights after Sept. 11.

But moves by Southwest to beef up its offerings have largely offset that.

``Southwest is the strongest carrier here,'' Gill said. ``They didn't cut back any flights.''

Southwest Airlines, for example, is offering a fall special of $19 one way to Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States. , and $29 one way between Oakland and Burbank, LAX, Ontario and Orange County airports Orange County Airport may refer to:
  • John Wayne Airport, also known as John Wayne-Orange County Airport, in Orange County, California.
  • Orange County Airport (New York), a general aviation airport in Montgomery, Orange County, New York.
. Travel will begin Sept. 3 for those fares.

``We always have the lowest prices in the industry,'' said Danielle Tocco, the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  area marketing manager for Southwest. ``Out of Burbank, we always have strong travel. In the summer, we like to stimulate travel.''

Gill said it is too early to tell how those special air fares will affect late summer and early fall travel out of Burbank Airport.

But some travel agents warned that the discount fares come with several limitations.

Many of the low air fares are offered only with limited seating, flights and travel dates, travel agents said. The tickets are nonrefundable, and flights must take place seven days after purchase.

``They have to read the fine print,'' said Bob Chase, owner of Chase Travel in Glendale. ``After Sept. 11, all these extra taxes were added, so that by the time we quote the price, the traveler isn't interested any more.''
