in the economy, Germany remains by far the largest market for motion controls, with sales worth over US$1 billion in 1993 and forecast to approach US$2.3 billion by 1999.

The next largest markets of France, Italy and the UK are dwarfed by comparison with France being about one third the size of the German market.

Spain continues to be the fastest growing market, with Frost & Sullivan forecasting a CAGR of 16 per cent between 1993 and 1999. Italy, the Benelux and the smaller European markets are clustered close behind with CAGRs ranging between 14.5 and 15 per cent.

In terms of product categories, digital controllers are by far the largest revenue earner, accounting for almost 25 percent of the market in 1993. This will remain the fastest growing product sector and is forecast to be worth nearly US$1.45 billion by 1999.

Robotics is the fastest growing end-user category with a CAGR of 16 per cent, forecast through to the end of the decade.

While many motion control manufacturers increased their sales revenues in 1993, profit margins were generally much tighter.

"As end-user markets become more competitive," says the report, "motion control markets have, by necessity, become more critical and analytical analytical, analytic

"This has inevitably involved cutbacks in the corporate workforce and the majority of motion control manufacturers have considerably fewer employees today than they had a few years ago," concludes Frost & Sullivan.
