BUMPER CROP BLOSSOMING CHERRY SEASON'S OUTLOOK BOWLS OVER LOCAL RANCHERS.

Byline: Charles F. Bostwick Staff Writer

LEONA VALLEY - Cherry trees are blooming A condition with older CCD devices that causes distortion at the pixel level. It occurs when the electrical charge created exceeds the storage capacity of the device and spills over into adjacent pixels. Newer CCDs incorporate anti-blooming circuitry to drain the excess charge. Some cherries could be ripe before Memorial Day, but the main crop usually ripens in early June, in time for the community's annual Cherry Festival and parade on June's second Saturday.

``We've got a good bloom this year,'' said Leona Valley resident Ron Bright, who has been growing cherries for 20 years. ``We just need to get through a few more weeks without a frost. I think we possibly will have a bumper crop if we don't get a frost in April.''

Blessed with an altitude and climate suited for cherries, Leona Valley has more than two dozen ``U-pick'' cherry ranches where visitors can enjoy the country atmosphere and pick the fruit themselves.

Growers say the appeal of the tree-ripened cherries is a sweeter taste than in supermarket fruit, which is picked earlier so it lasts until it is sold.

was planted in 1959 by Don Hobart, who started selling cherries to visitors in 1964. The U-pick orchards spread when other townspeople saw visitors' cars lining the road to his orchard.

Despite urbanization creeping west from Palmdale, orchards are continuing to spread in Leona Valley. A new orchard with thousands of trees is scheduled to open next season at the entrance to the community along Elizabeth Lake Road.

Cherry trees produce well in damp ground, he said.

``There could be some very big cherries,'' Bright said.

The annual Cherry Parade is scheduled for 11 a.m. June 11 along Leona Avenue. The festival takes place that day at the Leona Valley Community Center, offering barbecued food, cherry pie Cherry pie is a pie made with a cherry filling.
