Yesterday Mr Justice Coghlin told the 34-year-old man he was a "bully". He added: "Your cowardly assaults were perpetrated for the purpose of securing and maintaining both physical and mental control over your wife and family."

Newry Crown Court heard that the man, from Co Down, had very strict views on marriage and how children behaved.

He began assaulting his wife before they married in 1989.

He even hit her on their wedding day, knocking the veil from her head and leaving her with a visible lump.

Later he lashed out at his family for breaking rules such as eating sweets given by relatives on a Sunday.

His wife has now left him, taking children with her.

The deacon admitted 20 charges involving assaults and cruelty towards his family between March 1989 and May 1999.

Mr Justice Coghlin said the man's wife had blamed herself for the attacks.

But the accused had "continued to exploit this characteristic to dominate her by undermining her confidence".
