He even hit her on their wedding day, knocking the veil from her head and leaving her with a visible lump. Later he lashed out at his family for breaking rules such as eating sweets given by relatives on a Sunday. His wife has now left him, taking children with her. The deacon admitted 20 charges involving assaults and cruelty towards his family between March 1989 and May 1999. Mr Justice Coghlin said the man's wife had blamed herself for the attacks.
