BULLDOGS GIVEN BATTLE BY TECH FRESNO ST. 38, LA. TECH 28.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

FRESNO - Oregon State couldn't do it. Neither could Wisconsin, Colorado or Tulsa.

Turns out unheralded Louisiana Tech gave Fresno State its biggest - and most unpredictable - scare of the season.

After posting victories over college's elite, 10th-ranked Fresno State struggled with Louisiana Tech on Saturday at Bulldog Stadium Bulldog Stadium is an outdoor football stadium on the campus of California State University, Fresno in Fresno, California. It is the home field of the Fresno State Bulldogs of the Western Athletic Conference. . Not to worry. It was just for a half.

It wasn't Fresno State's passing game, rather its running game - surprisingly - that stole the show Saturday.

Fresno State led 31-21 after three quarters at Bulldog Stadium.

Parris Gaines scored on a 58-yard run on the third play of the second half to ignite the Bulldogs' crowd. Gaines, who had his first 100-yard rushing game of the season, ran up the middle and cut back to his left, outrunning three defenders along the sideline sideline

. He was hit but was able to keep his balance, just long enough to dive into the end zone and give Fresno State a 28-21 lead.

It was the spark the Bulldogs needed.

Asen Asparuhov kicked a 45-yard field goal for a 31-21 lead. Fresno State's highly touted, hard-hitting secondary had two interceptions - both by Kendall Edwards - in the third quarter.

Fresno State must finish 13-0 to even have a chance at a Bowl Championship Series game. Its first-half performance didn't impress anyone.
