BULL'S EYE IN NEWHALL; SHOOTOUT '97 PITS AREA CHP STATIONS.

On a picture-perfect day with the smell of barbecue in the air, the California Highway Patrol's Newhall office successfully defended its title Tuesday as the best shot among its Southland peers.

The stage was the North County Shootout Shootout

 '97, a shooting competition among Southern Division teams made up of officers and their superiors.

``This is serious competition,'' said Doug Sweeney of the Newhall office.

The shootout, which began in 1992, is designed to bring together officers from different divisions for a day of friendly competition between men and women who haven't seen each other since their days training in the CHP CHP Chapter

``There is no way anyone here shouldn't score a 300,'' Lottermoser said, referring to the highest score before bonus. True to his word, Lottermoser stepped up and scored a 300 to help carry Newhall to victory.

Newhall's Capt. Greg Augusta won the top gun award among managers.

Each year organizers gather entry fees to help pay for the event.

Sweeney said additional proceeds help fund the Newhall CHP's Explorer program
