Ventura County, known for its sprawling fields and commitment to open space, is both a home for agriculture and an area that is coping with booming population growth that began in the 1990s.

The county faces the challenge of preserving the qualities that have drawn residents there while allowing for growth: The county had a population of 791,000 in 2003 and grew 11 percent between 1990 and 2000.
