BUILDERS PUT TALENT INTO SHELTERING THE HOMELESS
SANTA ANA, Calif., March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Orange County, Calif., is

home to some 2.4 million people, but on any given night, between 8,000 and 10,000 men, women and children sleep on the streets. The causes of homelessness in this affluent county range from soaring land prices, a median home costing $283,500 to simple apartments priced above $500.
Three years ago, the Building Industry Association of Southern California's Orange County region (BIA/OC) decided to do more than simply donate cash to homeless care providers. HomeAid was created as part of the BIA's community outreach program to put the industry's people, talents and expertise toward finding a solution to the problem of homelessness. The first program of its kind in the nation, HomeAid raised more than $1 million in donations in its first two years including $800,000 in-kind service and $200,000 cash. The end result has been a 20 percent increase in the number of beds available to shelter the transitionally homeless in Orange County.
HomeAid's mission is to identify effective homeless care providers with successful shelter programs that need construction to add beds to the facility. HomeAid provides either renovation or new construction. This is how it works: a homebuilding company volunteers as "builder captain" with responsibility for overseeing the construction project. However, the real force behind HomeAid is the numerous small subcontractors that either donate, or offer at cost, the variety of in- kind services from concrete, framing and drywall; to carpet, furniture even engineering and architecture.
Despite one of the worst recessions in recent history, HomeAid has caught on quickly. The concept was adopted by the BIA of Southern California and all five regions are now forming HomeAid chapters in Orange, Riverside/San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Ventura countries. Through the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB), HomeAid representatives are presenting the concept to receptive audiences at building industry organizations throughout the country. HomeAid is even spreading outside the BIA to other corporations that want to join in the effort. Recently, Carl Karcher Enterprises, a fast-food chain; and Home Depot, a do-it-yourself building supply outlet, have become HomeAid sponsors.
According to HomeAid Executive Director Mike Lennon, "HomeAid is not only a great way for our industry to give back to the community in which we live -- we are able to make our contribution by giving of ourselves. HomeAid is, essentially, a builder and developer, and our target is the homeless."
